The perspective

Start with the whole.
Then examine the parts.

The enterprise is the starting point. Its subsystems make sense through their contribution to the whole.

A consequential distinction

There is a difference between seeing an enterprise as a whole system divided into subsystems and seeing it as separate subsystems that integrate into an enterprise.

The starting point changes the questions. Beginning with the whole directs attention to purpose, relationships, constraints and consequences. It asks what the enterprise needs to achieve and how its parts contribute to that outcome.

From that perspective, strategy, technology, work, governance and resilience become different ways of examining the same organizational system.

A subsystem’s performance has meaning through its contribution to the enterprise.

What becomes visible

The relationships matter.

A technology initiative can succeed locally while shifting work or risk to another area. A well-funded project can overwhelm the organization’s capacity to absorb change. An AI tool can improve a task while leaving the enterprise’s most consequential decisions unchanged.

Examining those relationships helps leaders ask better questions about priorities, authority, value, risk and the human capabilities required to act.

One enterprise. Multiple perspectives.

My books and frameworks develop this view from different directions. Each makes a particular set of relationships visible and offers a structured way to examine them.
